web page design

The web is a great place to start. There are collections galore – but make sure to read the conditions relating to how you can use them. The most popular first point of call these days is Google™, now being followed in the provision of an image search by Yahoo™, MSN™ and others. Whilst they will surely find a picture for you on someone’s site somewhere, that doesn’t mean you are entitled to use it! The copyright section has more information about this. The others featured here do specifically permit many of their images to be used for non-commercial publications – some appear quite unrestricted – but all ask that you credit either the site or the individual contributor. This seems simply good manners, never mind the legal issues, but how often do you do so?

No doubt you will find more and, of course, there are galleries your institution may have subscribed to which may entitle you to use their images as well as those where you can pay to acquire the right to use individual images.
