The e practitioner units

An e practitioner certificate requires completion of three framework units: one covering the fundamentals of e learning and two others. The current unit topics are listed below.


1 e learning fundamentals
This mandatory unit requires you to define e-learning, explore what constitutes effective practice and asks you to develop your own professional development plan in relation to e-learning
2 initial diagnostic assessment, induction and guidance
You will need to understand how e-learning can feature during initial course enquiry, induction and the use of techniques to help establish the needs of learners and record them in a personal learning plan
3 blended learning
How you might incorporate e-learning techniques to support or enhance teaching and learning would be demonstrated in achieving this unit, with the emphasis on recognising the value of traditional methods and establishing an appropriate blend of new and existing approaches
4 using learning environment platforms and on-line learning
Completing this unit will demonstrate that you are aware of a range of platforms for presenting and recording information, collaborating and communicating with learners and colleagues and can utilise a range of their facilities effectively, including in an on-line learning environment
5 choosing and using learning materials
You may use a range of e-learning materials – this unit will determine your skills in selecting those most appropriate for the task and in evaluating how well they supported teaching and learning
6 assembling and adapting materials
This unit requires that you demonstrate an ability either to plan and create new content or materials or adapt existing content, determining its requirements and meeting specified needs
7 assessment, tracking and portfolios
You will need to understand and demonstrate skills in using e-learning techniques to facilitate the recording of learners’ progress and achievements in this unit, as well as experience in the use of on-line assessment tools

8 supporting learners’ use of technology for learning
To achieve this unit you will be able to identify what training learners’ may need to maximise their success in utilising e-learning technologies and how such training and additional support can be most effectively delivered – it is not a test of your own ICT skills
9 coaching, mentoring and developing peer support
Achieving this unit will demonstrate that you have the skills needed for on-line collaborative activities, including coaching and mentoring skills
10 exploring the application of e tools
This unit requires that you update your knowledge and skills in utilising a range of new applications and equipment in the educational environment and determine potential applications for them in teaching and learning
11 undertake an e learning development project
Based on Unit Q of the LLUK e-learning and e-leadership standards, you will be required to demonstrate that you can apply project management techniques to e-learning implementation
12 developing materials and learning objects
This unit provides an opportunity for you to demonstrate more specialist skills in the field of developing original content and materials for e-learning, covering the process from planning through to evaluation of them in use
13 reviewing the application of learning platforms in teaching and learning
This is another specialist unit where you would be required to show an ability to determine the extent to which a learning platform or information technology service meets specified teaching and learning needs and critically evaluate these or alternative options
14 resource acquisition and deployment
Achieving this unit will demonstrate that you have a sound understanding of how to acquire new technology and deploy hardware and applications effectively
15 supporting staff development
This unit encourages the engagement of the educational workforce in developing e-learning and you would need to demonstrate an ability to apply your understanding of the benefits of e-learning techniques, your planning, presentation and communication skills in transferring this to your colleagues and monitoring their progress as an internal adviser.
