Design created as 400 x 400 pixel and saved as pdf with crop marks for printing Web version 100 x 100 as above saved in gif format 4 Comparison of file sizes and task notes
An original photograph of pink flowers was used. First the resolution was increased to 300dpi and then the width set at 3300 pixels to match A4 printing. The image was devided into three equal sections and a greyscale effect applied to the left and a watercolour to the right. The text Valentine was added in a subtle way to the left section to hint at the 'secret' theme agreed with the client. All work for this was done within Serif PhotoPlus. A version resized to 1024 pixels wide and at 72dpi was created too, saved in jpg format. This was just under 200KB compared to nearly 30MB for the print file. The logo was created using Serif DrawPlus with a simple red square, heart and Valentine text in Footlight font. A 400 pixel square version was saved in pdf format with crop marks for printing and a 100 pixel square version saved as a gif file for web use. both files remained small due to the minimal numbers of colours required. The A5 brochure utilised a section of the original photograph, embellished with a spray-paint brush heart and with a logo and the text 'We can keep your secret'. Created using DrawPlus again and saved as pdf with crop marks for printing and a gif file for web use. The pdf is nearly 5MB but the web file just 343KB. That is still a little big for web use and further work may be required to get the file size smaller without losing text definition. On relection, use of a sans-serif font would have avoided problems with compression and I would have liked to work more on the A4 image text which doesn't work as well as intended. Adding the message used on the brochure would be better, perhaps.
