When
I first produced this site back in 2000 the listings were published
as tables on web pages, with about 20 items on each. Transferring
them from Excel to the web was a bit tedious but necessary to minimise
the file size in the days when most of us had dial-up internet connections.
How things have changed. The whole file of 1467 entries is smaller
than a typical digital photo and shouldn't take more than a few
seconds to download. It's also easy to print, copy bits from, add
your own comments to or whatever - just include my copyright note
and my contact address if you publish it yourself elsewhere.
The
lists are sheets in a Microsoft Excel97 file and set up to work
very much like a web site. Click a link on the front page to browse
a section, or click the tabs at the bottom. Where there are lots
of entries the rows can be scrolled but the headings should remain
visible. Another way to find things is to use the filter buttons
available on some sheets. If you're familiar with spreadsheets this
should be plain sailing. If not then have a look at notes I've written
on spreadsheets generally which are available at The
Studyzone.
It's
an old version of Excel but quite adequate. However, I guess some
of you may not have the Microsoft product or maybe no spreadsheet
software at all. All is not lost - there is an excellent on-line
spreadsheet application by Google.
It's free. I may well have a go at publishing them there to save
you the trouble. More news here soon if it works. [Dec 2006] Try

If
that sounds complicated then just get the wonderful OpenOffice
application by Microsoft's competitors, Sun. Its spreadsheet is
virtually identical and can be used with Excel files.
Assuming
you get into the file one way or another, I have also set print
areas for each section so that those using A4 paper can get nicely
laid-out copies. Friends in the States using wider, shorter Letter
size paper (and those of you in Europe who didn't bother to install
A4 defaults!) may have to make some adjustments.
If
you need further help just contact me. Unlike the web pages, I can
quickly update this file so check for updates regularly, and errors
that I shall fix when you tell me about them. You can just download
and overwrite your copy.

the lists at the link below.
